CCTV in Midlothian

Midlothian Council has recently upgraded its CCTV infrastructure.

Due to current funding constraints, the Council is unable to install equipment that streams all footage centrally to Midlothian House.

Instead, there are nine separate CCTV viewing areas, each serving its respective town.

The CCTV system is owned and managed by Midlothian Council. Police Scotland has been granted access to the system and can view footage when a crime has been reported, and it is believed that CCTV could assist in identifying a suspect or capturing key evidence. Please note that police use of CCTV is entirely reactive — Police do not have the authorisation to proactively monitor the cameras in real time and only access the system when authorised to do so by Midlothian Council. There is currently no Midlothian Council CCTV monitoring team.
